Panchakarma and Thokkanam Department:

The hospital provides classical Panchakarma, Thokkanam treatments along with specialized traditional kerala treatments after the assessment of its physicians. The hospital has 4 specially designed therapy theatres to accommodate opd and ipd patients as well as wellness therapies. The therapies are done by well trained professional group of expert and experienced therapists under the supervision of the physicians from CHH. Male and female therapists are available for the therapies to their respective half.

1. ABHYANGAM (THERAPEUTIC MASSAGE)

Ayurvedic oil massage stimulates and relaxes the body instantaneously. The circulatory and lymphatic systems are stimulated along with the sweat glands and sebaceous glands. Through this massage tense muscles relax, a stiff joint loosens and nerves are soothed. The massage lubricates and moisturizes the skin removing dead cells. The combination of an Ayurvedic Oil massage and a herbal steam bath is very effective to drain the body of toxins and to re-establish the bio chemical balance of the body.

Abhyangam is an Ayurveda way of oil massage with Marma therapy. Marma are vital points of the body which contain Prana energy. Gentle pressure on Marma while doing massage provides Prana energy to the body and mind which gives ultimate healing. In Abhyangam, special herb infused Ayurvedic oils are slowly warmed up and gently massaged in to the skin. This massage is deeply relaxing, harmonizes, detoxifies, strengthens and revitalizes the entire body. This massage also improves lymph flow and stimulates the immune system. It simultaneously calms and strengthens the nervous system. In this way Abhyangam massage is a protector, preserver and rejuvenator.

2. UDWARTHANAM

The whole body is gently massaged with medicated powders prepared with various herbs. This helps to reduce fat patches from the body known as cellulites, toning of the muscles, improves blood circulation and eases joint pains. Regular Udvartanam is good for not only cellulites but it helps to lose weight by increasing the basal metabolic rate.

Podikizhi is a therapy that is mainly done with the powders of herbal plants such as alpiniagalanga, ricinuscommunis, sandalwood and dry ginger. This is specially recommended for Rheumatoid Arthritis, Inflammatory conditions and Obesity.Duration: 1 ½ hours / Day.Course: 3days/7days

B.ELAKIZHI (MASSAGE WITH HEATED HERBAL LEAVES)
Heated herbal leaves or herbs are applied to the whole body by means of poultices. The poultices are frequently dipped in hot Ayurvedic Oils during the treatment. C. OTHER KIZHIS
Other types of kizhi are recommended for specific conditions. MuttaKizhi is a form of treatment where boiled eggs and herbal powders are made into pouches and then applied to the body, along with hot medicated oils. MuttaKizhi is very effective in facial paralysis and hemiplegia.

NarangaKizhiis done with linen bags containing cut and fried pieces of lime, garlic, dill seed powder and rock salt. It is a method of therapeutic sweating and as moderate heat is required to sweat, the bundles have to be warmed up periodically by dipping in warm medicated oil.

Mamsakizhi is type of massage that uses kizhis containing meat and oil. This is especially advised in degenerative conditions of musles.

4. NJAVARA KIZHI
It is a process by which the whole body or any specific part thereof is made to perspire by the application of certain medical puddings (made from Glutinous Rice) externally in the form of poultices. During the massage these bags are frequently dipped in the mixture of milk and herbal decoction. It is a therapeutic procedure for nerve weakness and wastage of muscles.

5. PIZHICHIL
Pizhichil or Sarvangdhara as a special procedure of methodologically pouring warm liquids over the entire body.warm medicated oil is squeezed all over the body with the help of cloth pieces, which are periodically dipped into vessels containing medicated oil.

Indication: Pizhichil is an effective remedy for optimum relaxation. This treatment is also very useful for sexual weakness, nervous weakness, rheumatic pains, Vata imbalances, hypertension and emaciation of limbs.

6. SIRODHARA
Popularly known as third eye treatment of lord Shiva, a therapeutic Marma head massage with herbal oils is done and herbal oil, medicated milk or herbal decoction is poured in gently and steadily over the forehead in a continuous stream using a special rhythmic swaying movement. This results in a fantastic sense of deep relaxation and inner peace. It works on cerebral system, helps in relaxing the nervous system and balancing the PranaVayu around the head. It improves the function of five senses, helps in insomnia, stress, anxiety, depression, hair loss, fatigue, imbalance of Vata and makes one calm and fresh.

Shirodhara is a purifying and rejuvenating therapy designed to eliminate toxins and mental exhaustion as well as relieve stress and any ill effects on the central nervous system.

Shirodhara is a unique form of ancient therapy of pouring oil on the forehead from a specific height and for a specific period continuously and arithmetically allowing the oil torun through the scalp and into the hair.

This is a subtype of Murdhataila which means keeping the medicated oil on the head region. The types of Murdhataila other than Shirodhara are ShiroAbhyanga, Pichu and ShiroBasti. So the concept of shirodhara is mainly concerned with the application of oil though the other liquids are also used for the therapy but they are associated with specific clinical conditions.

Indications: Shirodhara will help in the diseases/disorders related with Head,Neck, Eyes, Ears, Nose, Throat and Nervous system. Its an effective remedy in Vata disorders, Insomnia, Epilepsy, Various mental disturbances

8. NETRA THARPANA: Ayurvedic Eye Rejuvenation
This treatment aims to provide optimum rejuvenation to eyes. Dough of ulunthu / Urad (black gram) is put around the eye ball in such a way that a dam like appearance is seen. Then herbal healing ghee or oil (clarified butter oil) is put in this groove to lubricate eye and surrounding areas which will be kept warm for 30 – 35 minutes. This provides improved vision with beautiful eyes and strengthening of eye tissues.It also helps in under eye circles if done regularly for few days.Duration: 20-30 mts/ dayCourse: 7-14 days

11. NASYAM
The administration of drugs through the nose is called Nasya. Nasya is particularly useful in the treatment of diseases occurring in the organs situated above the clavicle. It will promote the functions of the sensory and motor organs above the clavicle. It specifically provides strength to the head, nose and neck. Indirectly it works on the whole body by improving the functioning of the endocrine glands. It will prevent premature wrinkling, graying and falling of the hair.
