A kidney stone is a hard, crystalline mineral material formed within the kidney or urinary tract. Kidney stones often cause severe pain in the abdomen, flank or groin. The condition of having kidney stones is termed as Nephrolithiasis. This condition is called Vrukka Ashmari in Ayurveda (vrukka means kidney, and ashmari means stone – A small hard deposit that form in the kidney and it is often painful when passed).

Causes of Kidney Stones:

Men are four times more likely to get kidney stones than women, and if you have previously had a kidney stone then you will have a 50% chance of developing another one with five years. Most people have no predisposing factors to explain why they develop kidney stones.

You may have an increased risk of developing Kidney stones if you:

1. Have a family history of kidney stones.

2. Eat a diet high in protein

3. Excess intake of Vitamin D and lack of Vitamin C

4. Sedentary lifestyle aggravates things further.

5. Insufficient intake of fluids or heavy perspiration makes the urine highly concentrated and leads to stone formation.

6. Excess intake of meat and spices, white flour and sugar products, tea and coffee, acid forming foods.

7. Over eating can lead to formation of stones

8. Taking too many laxatives or taking them too often.

9. Overweight

10. Type 1 diabetes

11. PCOS

12. Overuse of NSAIDs (Non Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs)

Sign and Symptoms

1. Pain in the back, flank

2. Pain or burning during urination

3. Frequent urination

4. Nausea and Vomiting

5. Fever and chills

6. Excessive sweating
