Cancer refers to an uncontrolled increase in the number of cells that can invade other healthy sites of the body and produce tumors. It is caused due to mutations (changes in the genes at level of DNA). The genes in our body control the growth and development of specific cells. When there is a mutation, the cells either divide uncontrollably or fail to perish leading to production of a cluster of cells or tumor in any part of the body.

Types of cancer:
There are more than 100 types of Cancer and their occurrence depends on a variety of factors like age, gender, race etc.
1. Non-Melanoma skin Cancer- squamous cell and basal cell cancer Signs are- scaly, raised red patches, Sores that don’t heal or reappear after healing, small lumps that itch or bleed on pressure. Seen commonly over the head, neck, face & trunk.
2. Breast Cancer- Signs are- Painless or painful lumps in the breast with or without swelling, peau d orange (orange peel like skin), abnormal nipple discharge & nipple retraction.
3. Lung cancer- Signs include- long standing/chronic cough, spitting blood, weight loss, frequent lung infections etc.
4. Prostate Cancer- Signs include- Urgency to urinate, Increased frequency of urination, pain, bleeding or sometimes burning sensation during urination & discomfort in pelvic area.
5. Colon Cancer- signs are- unexplained weight loss, fatigue, changes in bowel pattern, chronic pain in the abdomen, blood in stools etc.
6. Melanoma-signs include- an asymmetrical, expanding spot on the skin with varied colours that itches or bleeds.
7. Lymphoma- Signs include-Enlarged/inflamed lymph nodes weight loss, fever, chills or night sweats, repeated infections etc
8. Leukemia- signs include Fever, chills, night sweats, Chronic fatigue, enlarged lymph nodes, easy bruising & bleeding etc.
9. Pancreatic cancer- Chronic pain in the upper abdomen, Fatigue, etc are seen only in late stages of the disease.
10. Endometrial cancer- signs include- Abnormal vaginal bleeding, abnormal vaginal discharge, unexplained weight loss, pain in the lower pelvis.
